Mangabeiras Park, on the slopes of the Serra do Curral in the south of Belo Horizonte, is the city's largest green area: 337 hectares above 1,000 metres, opened in 1982 with landscaping by Roberto Burle Marx. Its forest holds 59 springs, more than 150 bird species and 30 kinds of mammal. It has paved walking paths, an Atlantic Forest trail of medium difficulty, picnic spots, sports courts, a skate track and playgrounds, the Mirante da Mata lookout over the city, and an internal bus every hour. Entry is free and parking is paid; it opens Tuesday to Sunday 8:00-17:00, last entry 16:30, with access to the lookout until 16:00.
