A small historic house in Mumbai's Gamdevi district that was Mahatma Gandhi's base in the city for about 17 years, from 1917 to 1934, when he stayed with his friend Revashankar Jhaveri; today it is a museum devoted to his life. From this house Gandhi launched major political campaigns, including the Non-Cooperation and Khilafat movements, and it was here that his bond with the spinning wheel began, which became a symbol of his call for self-reliance. The museum has Gandhi's room kept as it was, with his bedding and spinning wheel, a library of thousands of books, an exhibition of photographs, documents and letters, and a series of small dioramas telling the story of his life simply. Entry is free with a donations box, per visitor guides, and it opens daily from morning to evening. The house is small and quiet, needing under an hour, and lies near the Hanging Gardens and Malabar Hill.
