Bread from the bakery beside it, a Provençal cheese, olives, tomatoes and seasonal fruit — plus a hot slice of **socca** or **pissaladière** eaten on the spot. All for a fraction of a Croisette restaurant bill. Bring cash and a bag, and go before ten. Then climb to Le Suquet or head to the free public beach west of the centre and eat there.

The Marché Forville is Cannes's real kitchen and its most honest place: a covered hall below the Suquet hill, open from seven in the morning, lined with the stalls of local farmers and fishermen — fish out of the water hours earlier, seasonal Provençal vegetables, olives, herbs, cheeses and flowers. It is where **Cannes's restaurant chefs** actually shop, not a tourist version of that: you hear French rather than English, and the prices are residents' prices. Around it are bakeries, coffee roasters and stalls serving **socca** (the Niçois chickpea pancake) and **pissaladière** (onion tart). ⚠ **It closes on Mondays** — a flea market takes its place all day instead of the food market. The best time is before ten, when the produce is complete and the hall is alive. And it is the cheapest way to eat well in an expensive town: buy your lunch here and eat it on the beach.

Chickpea and onion tarts from the Niçois kitchen.
Not Croisette prices — this is the locals' market.
