Building began in 1914 with three courtyards in a row in traditional Chinese style, and in 1922 the Daqing Building was added, a three-storey Roman-style building of grey brick, making the compound a striking blend of Chinese and European architecture, with rock gardens and other buildings such as the Xiaoqing Building with its green wooden balconies.
