Shenyang's oldest shopping street, running some 1,500 metres north of Mukden Palace; its history goes back to the late Qing dynasty, and after its 1997 renovation it became China's first pedestrian street. Department stores, malls, sweet shops and street-food stalls line both sides, with old European-style facades among the modern buildings, and it fills up in the evenings and on holidays, making it easy to pair a palace visit with some shopping. The street is always open, with Zhongjie and Dongzhongjie metro stations along it. North-eastern cooking relies heavily on pork, so look for restaurants under the halal sign.
