**A small room whose vault is a night sky of eight hundred gold stars on deep blue** — beside San Vitale, the earliest mosaic-decorated building in Ravenna and the most affecting. Built around **425–450**, **it is very small**: a cross plan of only a few metres. ⚠ **The effect comes from the size rather than despite it**: **every interior surface is mosaic** — **and you are inside the box**, not looking at it from a distance. ✅ **The little dome is a sky**: **deep blue scattered with gold stars** turning about a cross, **with the four evangelists in the corners**. ✅ **Over the door is the Good Shepherd** — Christ as a beardless youth among his sheep in a green meadow, **among the loveliest things in early Christian art**. ⚠ **The visit is limited to five minutes** at peak.

**By going in knowing exactly what you are looking at — and not spending them on a camera.** ⚠ **Why the limit**: the building is **very small** (a few metres), **the visitors many**, ⚠ **and human breath and its moisture genuinely damage mosaic** — **so the limit is protection, not officiousness**. ✅ **The best order within the five minutes**: **(1) do not photograph first**. Go in, **stand in the middle, look up, and wait thirty seconds** — **your eyes have come from daylight and will see nothing until they adjust**; **most people who leave disappointed did not wait**. ✅ **(2) The star vault**: notice how **the stars crowd closer towards the centre**, creating a sense of infinite depth — **a deliberate optical device**. ✅ **(3) Turn to the door**: **the Good Shepherd is above it** — behind you as you enter, **so many people miss it entirely**. ✅ **(4) The side lunettes**: deer drinking at the spring. ✅ **(5) Now photograph** if time remains. ⚠ **And do not use flash** — it will not give you a good picture in this light anyway, **and it damages the mosaic**.
