A square Mughal garden on the far bank of the Yamuna, about 300 by 300 m and perfectly aligned with the Taj Mahal; its name means «Moonlight Garden», and it was the last of eleven gardens the Mughals laid out along this bank. Its origins are credited to Emperor Babur, and Shah Jahan later chose the spot as the ideal place to view the Taj, so the garden was designed to show the tomb reflected in a large octagonal pool by moonlight. Today it is the best place to see and photograph the Taj Mahal away from the crowds, especially at sunset when the marble turns gold, with the whole mausoleum in view across the river beyond neat lawns and paths. Foreign visitors pay ₹300, per the ASI Agra circle, and it opens from sunrise to sunset. It's the perfect option on Fridays, when the Taj Mahal is closed to tourists.
