A large protected forest at Ayer Keroh on Malacca's approaches, covering about three hundred and sixty hectares; it was founded in 1984 as a recreational forest and renamed the Melaka Botanical Garden in 2006. It is a calm green escape far from the crowds of the old town. Paved roads and shaded trails run beneath tall trees, good for walking, jogging and cycling on bikes hired at the entrance, including a long walking route. There are suspension bridges and watchtowers, a treetop ropes-and-zipline adventure course with its own fee, and a storyland of figures for children. Around the grounds are a forestry museum, a book village, picnic and camping areas and playgrounds. Entry is free, and electric buggies and bikes can be hired at reasonable prices. Come in the morning before the heat, with water and insect repellent. It lies near Zoo Melaka and the Orang Asli museum, so combine them in a day at Ayer Keroh.
