A small museum in the heart of historic Malacca, telling the story of Islam in a city whose sultanate was, in the fifteenth century, one of the great centres for the spread of Islam in Southeast Asia. It occupies an old building that housed the Malacca Islamic Council before the council moved beside the State Mosque, and was then restored and fitted out as a museum. The museum shows copies of early Quran manuscripts, the history of the state's mosques and their distinctive styles, the lives of scholars and religious figures from Malacca and Malaysia, and pieces of Muslim life in the region. It is a fine complement to a visit to the historic mosques of the old town. Entry is a token fee of about three ringgit for foreign adults, and the museum closes on Mondays. It sits among the museums near the red Stadthuys square, so it fits easily into a walking tour. Half an hour is enough, and it is quiet and air-conditioned in the midday heat. Combine it with the Kampung Kling and Kampung Hulu mosques to complete the story of Islam in Malacca.
