The Mercado Central is Belo Horizonte's best-known market, filling a whole block in the city centre; the mayor founded it on 7 September 1929 as an open market of simple stalls for distributing food. In 1964 its traders bought it and formed a cooperative, rebuilding it with a metal roof, internal lanes and a car park. It has hundreds of small shops selling the riches of Minas Gerais: its famous cheeses, homemade sweets and preserves, spices and herbs, soapstone pots and crafts, birds and plants. There are also small bars and shops selling cachaça, the state's best-known alcoholic drink, so take note if you avoid it. Morning is the best time to visit, and it closes early on Sundays. Taste the cheeses before buying; most sellers offer samples.
