Belo Horizonte's Fashion Museum is an applied arts museum devoted to fashion and the first public museum of its kind in Brazil. It occupies the old city council building at the corner of Rua da Bahia and Avenida Augusto de Lima, a building inspired by Portuguese Manueline neo-Gothic architecture and known locally as the «Castelinho», the little castle, of Rua da Bahia. Before that it housed a Fashion Reference Centre founded in 2012; the project grew as the city's historical museum gathered pieces from different periods of its history. At its opening the collection held more than two thousand pieces, from the city's founding in the 19th century to 1987, and its first exhibition looked at the textile industry of Minas Gerais. Since June 2017 the museum has offered free open classes in fashion, design and decoration, given by teachers from the region's colleges. It makes a short visit in the city centre for lovers of fashion and architecture.
