The Popular Art Market, the old Municipal Market of Feira de Santana, is a historic building in the centre of Bahia's second-largest city. Feira de Santana has been a trading town for most of its history, «the main emporium of the Bahian sertão» at the crossroads of the cattle trade between the dry interior and Salvador, and Praça João Pedreira served as a great open-air market. The town decided to build the market in 1901 to organise the meat trade and make it more hygienic, and it officially opened on 27 March 1915. It was designed by the engineer Acciolly Ferreira da Silva in an eclectic style with neoclassical and Gothic Revival elements, echoing his nearby town hall, covers 2,562 square metres and was listed by the state in 1994. In 1980 the town turned it into a popular art market showcasing the region's crafts and artworks. It makes a short visit to buy souvenirs and discover the crafts of the Bahian sertão.
