The Public Market, or Central Market, of Pelotas is a historic building on Praça Sete de Julho in the city's historic centre. Work began in the 1840s, with sources giving dates between 1846 and 1849, and it was completed around 1852; travellers of the time considered it better than the markets of Porto Alegre and Rio Grande. Its construction is linked to Emperor Pedro II's visit to the south and the revival of trade after the Farroupilha Revolution. One of its features is a tower imported from Hamburg, restored in 2002. The national heritage institute listed it in 1985, and it was restored under the federal Monumenta programme for historic centres in the early 2000s. The market still keeps the city's memory alive alongside everyday trade, and it lies a few steps from Praça Coronel Pedro Osório, making a stop on a walk through central Pelotas.
