Praça Coronel Pedro Osório is the main square of Pelotas and the heart of its historic centre, which holds the city's largest group of buildings from between 1870 and 1930. Eight entrances lead to its centre, where the «As Nereidas» fountain, imported from France in the 1870s, stands. On the square stand three historic mansions, numbers 2, 6 and 8, built between 1878 and 1880 and listed together by the national heritage institute in 1977 as Brazilian cultural heritage. Mansion number 8 now houses the Museu do Doce, the Sweets Museum, which tells the story of the city's famous confectionery tradition. The square makes a walk among ornate eclectic facades and trees, with the Public Market and the Sete de Abril theatre a few steps away, gathering the city's main sights in a small area.
