The Mesa do Imperador, «Emperor's Table», is a shaded stone lookout in Tijuca National Park at 487 metres, where the nobility held picnics in the 19th century and Emperor Pedro II stopped on his forest walks, which gave it its name. It looks out over the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon and the Lagoa, Ipanema, Leblon and Jardim Botânico districts, with part of the Cagarras islands out at sea. It lies on the same road as the Vista Chinesa viewpoint, linking Horto with Alto da Boa Vista, so the two are seen together, free daily 8:00-17:00 (to 18:00 in summer). No public transport reaches it, so go by car or taxi.
