The City Park, also called Gávea Park, is a municipal conservation area in Rio's Gávea district, covering 470,000 square metres up to the edge of Tijuca National Park, with which it forms a large protected area. The land was first private property, holding the summer house of the Marquis of São Vicente, built in 1809 on its highest ground. In 1939 the Guinle family handed the estate to the city, which turned it into a public park, and in 1948 the Rio de Janeiro City History Museum moved into the house, with a collection of some 24,000 pieces by artists and photographers who recorded the city. Part of the park is dense forest and the rest a broad open garden crossed by dammed streams that formed a small lake with an island, on steep ground. It makes a quiet walk in nature away from the beaches; check the museum's hours.
