One of the world's greatest art museums, the largest in the Americas and the third-largest museum in the world by floor area, on Fifth Avenue at the eastern edge of Central Park. It was the most visited museum in the United States, with about 5.7 million visitors in fiscal year 2025. Its collection of about 1.5 million works is divided into 17 departments, ranging from ancient Egypt and the Near East to Islamic, Asian, European and American art, and the first part of its huge building went up in 1880. Famous highlights include the ancient Egyptian Temple of Dendur, from around 15 BCE, rebuilt stone by stone in a glass hall looking out on the park, the Islamic art galleries, a Ming-style Chinese courtyard and the arms and armour collection. Tickets cost $30 for adults, $22 for seniors and $17 for students, and are free for children under 12, per the museum's official site. It is closed on Wednesdays and open until 9 pm on Fridays and Saturdays; allow at least half a day and choose specific galleries.
