A man-made lake in the heart of old Ningbo, dug under the Tang as a reservoir and landscaped under the Song by the writer Zeng Gong into «ten islets» around and within it; from the Song and Yuan dynasties it was the city's centre of learning, where many scholars lived and taught. Today a public park rings the lake with bridges, pavilions, willows and old houses; it is a protected historic area of the city and a favourite place for Ningbo people to stroll morning and evening, with the famous Tianyi Pavilion library next door. The lake and its park are free to visit.
