Quiet streets of early twentieth-century buildings, historically the artists' quarter.
Münchner Freiheit is a square and metro station in the Schwabing district north of central Munich. The name means Munich Freedom, given after the war in honour of a German resistance group that worked against the Nazi regime in the city. The square is not a sight in the conventional sense but a lively neighbourhood centre: cafés, restaurants, shops and a small market. Schwabing was historically Munich's artists' and students' quarter, and something of that character survives. The metro station itself is striking: designed in strong blues with mirrored columns, and among the most architecturally distinctive on the Munich network. The square makes a good starting point for the nearby English Garden and for Schwabing's quieter streets, lined with early twentieth-century buildings.
