**Twentieth-century abstract art inside two medieval houses hanging off a cliff** — and Spain's most famous small museum. The painter **Fernando Zóbel** founded it in **1966**, ⚠ **on private rather than public initiative** — **gathering the work of his generation of Spanish abstract artists when nobody else was collecting it**. ✅ **The collection**: **Tàpies**, **Saura**, **Chillida**, **Millares** and **Zóbel himself** — **the generation that brought Spanish art back into modernism after decades of isolation**. ⚠ **The building is half the experience**: **small rooms with timber ceilings, white walls and windows opening straight onto the gorge** — ✅ **so you look at a painting, then turn and see the cliff**. ✅ **And the design of the display is itself influential** and studied.

**Because it gave Spanish abstract art a home when it had none — in a country whose official art was conservative.** ✅ **The context**: **in 1950s and 1960s Spain under Franco** the **official art was conservative and realist**, ⚠ **state museums did not collect contemporary abstraction**, **and private galleries were few**. ⚠ **So a generation of Spanish artists worked and exhibited in Paris and New York more than at home.** ✅ **What Zóbel did**: **a Spanish painter born in Manila and educated at Harvard**, ⚠ **he bought his contemporaries' work with his own money** when it had neither market nor recognition; **then looked for somewhere to show it**. ✅ **And he chose Cuenca**: **hanging houses that were near-ruins**, **restored by the town and given to him**. ⚠ **The decision looked eccentric**: **a modern art museum in a small remote town**. ✅ **The result**: **the museum became a point of reference** — **visited by Europe's artists and critics**, **and it gave the movement legitimacy and a place**; ✅ **the collection later passed to the Juan March Foundation**. ⚠ **And the display design itself became a studied model** for showing art inside historic buildings.
