The Pueblo de Luis Regional Museum fills Trelew's old railway station, built in 1887 when the line from Puerto Madryn was completed to this point, making it the railhead and the seed of the city. Trelew is Welsh for «Lewis's town», after Lewis Jones, one of the pioneers of the Welsh settlement of the Chubut valley, and the museum takes its name from it. In seven rooms it tells the story of the city and the lower Chubut valley: the Tehuelche and Mapuche peoples, the Welsh settlers, the Central Chubut Railway, the other communities that made the city, and the accounts of travellers who explored the Patagonian coast between 1520 and 1865. Outside, old wagons and tools stand in the open air around the handsome station building. There is a small entry fee, and it opens all week for long hours. Pair it with Trelew's fossil museum and a visit to nearby Gaiman.
