The Campos Gerais Museum in Ponta Grossa, Paraná, is run by the State University of Ponta Grossa, with a mission to help preserve the cultural heritage of the «Campos Gerais», the high grassy plains that stretch across the middle of the state, through cultural, educational and tourist activities. The idea took shape in 1948, when a group of local intellectuals at the «Euclides da Cunha Cultural Centre» began debating the need to preserve the region's culture and identity, among them Professor Faris Michaele, one of the museum's founders. The museum was then linked to the city's faculty of philosophy and sciences, and through it to the university. Its collection of historical and archaeological pieces, documents and photographs tells the region's story: its Indigenous peoples, the route of the «tropeiros», the mule drivers who crossed the plains between southern Brazil and São Paulo, and the immigrants who settled it. Entry is usually free; check times.
