The Manaus City Museum is in the historic centre, opened on 24 October 2018, the city's anniversary, in the historic building known as the Paço da Liberdade, the former city hall on Praça Dom Pedro II. The idea for the museum dates from 1982, but work only began in 2006 with preparations in the building. Restoration stopped in 2007 because of important archaeological finds in excavations beneath the building, which yielded more than 200 pieces, including indigenous burial urns. The museum tells the story of Manaus with modern, technology-based displays that transformed the building's rooms, and it sits in the heart of the historic centre close to other sights. Reports say entry is free, though sources disagree on hours; check before you go.
