The Palace of Justice stands right behind the Amazon Theatre on Avenida Eduardo Ribeiro in central Manaus, one of the finest examples of classical architecture from the golden age of rubber. Governor Eduardo Ribeiro signed the building contract on 18 April 1894 with the firm Moers & Moreton, and a two-storey building with an imposing stone and brick façade went up to house the courts of Amazonas state, opening in 1900. It was listed as historic and artistic heritage of the state in 1980, and its rooms are named after figures linked to its founding and to the Amazonas judiciary. Today the state culture department runs it as a cultural centre open to the public, showing the old courtrooms and their furniture and hosting exhibitions, concerts, theatre, film and talks, with around 20,000 visitors a year. Entry is free. It usually opens Tuesday to Saturday 9:00-17:00 and makes a short stop on a walk around historic central Manaus after the Amazon Theatre.
