The Museu da Gente Sergipana (Museum of the People of Sergipe) is an interactive multimedia museum about the people of the state, opened on 26 November 2011 in a restored 1926 building known locally as the Atheneuzinho. Its artistic concept is by Marcello Dantas, who also worked on São Paulo's Museum of the Portuguese Language, and it won an architecture award in 2012 and attraction of the year in 2013. The visit begins at an interactive map of the state where you hear the accents of each region, then moves through themed rooms: a virtual street market where you haggle with a vendor, a 360-degree tunnel you ride through in a boat across six landscapes from beach and mangrove to backlands and Atlantic forest, games about farming and local dishes, a carousel that drives animations of Sergipe towns, and a mirror maze of crafts, legends and ways of life. Entry is free; it opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-16:00, last entry 15:00.
