The Olímpio Campos Palace is one of Sergipe's most important heritage buildings, opened in 1863 and the seat of the state government until 1995; in 2010 it became a museum. Emperor Pedro II visited it while still under construction on 10 January 1860. After the capital moved from São Cristóvão to Aracaju, a «Provincial Palace» housing the government and the governor's residence was proposed; early designs were rejected until one by the engineer Francisco Pereira da Silva was approved with an added upper floor, offices below and the audience hall and residence above. Building ran from 1859 to 1863, and it took its present name in 1954. Nearby on the Sergipe River stands the «Emperor's Bridge», the landing stage prepared for the emperor's arrival in 1860. Visits are free and guided, passing through the governors' rooms and offices and telling some of the state's history, with an illuminated map of historic central Aracaju. Check the hours.
