The Joinville Art Museum is a municipal museum created by law in 1973 at the suggestion of the artist Antonio Mir and opened on 3 September 1976 to document, study and conserve works of art, especially those by the city's own artists. It is run by the Joinville Cultural Foundation. The museum occupies the old house of the German immigrant Ottokar Doerffel, who founded Joinville's first newspaper in the second half of the nineteenth century. Building began in 1854 and took ten years, with most of the materials brought from Europe; it is one of the oldest masonry buildings in the city and its architecture draws visitors' attention. In its early years the museum became a meeting place for artists, hosting exhibitions, film screenings, music, theatre and dance. Today it holds over a thousand works and a library of more than two thousand volumes, and each year it hosts the «Joinville Artists' Collective», running since 1971, which shows contemporary art and introduces new talent. It has two exhibition annexes in the Cidadela Cultural Antarctica. The visit is quiet, and a pleasant garden surrounds the house.
