The Santa Catarina Art Museum, known as MASC, is the state's official institution for the visual arts. It was created by decree on 18 March 1949 as the Museum of Modern Art of Florianópolis, in the same period that saw the birth of major art museums elsewhere in Brazil. The idea grew out of the «Exhibition of Contemporary Art» that the writer Marques Rebelo brought to the city in 1948, encouraged by a circle of young writers and artists known as the «Grupo Sul». Its first collection included works by leading modernists such as Alfredo Volpi, Iberê Camargo, Athos Bulcão and Portinari, and it has grown through donations; since 1985 artists who exhibit here have donated works to it. After years moving between unsuitable rooms, the museum is now housed in the Centro Integrado de Cultura in the Agronômica district, where it shows its permanent collection and temporary exhibitions.
