Morro da Cruz is the highest point of the massif of the same name in the middle of Santa Catarina Island, right above central Florianópolis. It was called Pau da Bandeira when the city was known as Nossa Senhora do Desterro, because a signal station was set up on its summit to announce, by code, ships arriving from the open sea. The road over the hill was once the shortest way between the capital and the Trindade district. Although it is only 285 metres high and not the island's highest point, it is the easiest to reach and gives the most complete view, thanks to its central position. From the lookout you can see both the north and south bays, the city's bridges including the Hercílio Luz suspension bridge, and the island and mainland together; at sunset and after dark it becomes the best place to watch the city lights. You can drive up or take a taxi.
