The region's first school.
The Dr. Octaviano Armando Gaiarsa Santo André Museum is one of the main museums of Santo André, in the industrial «ABC» region south-east of São Paulo. It was formally created by a municipal law on 3 August 1982 and is named after a doctor and city councillor who was one of its leading promoters. Since 1990 the museum has occupied a building designed by the architect José Van Humbeeck in 1914 and built by the state as the region's first primary school. The building was listed by the city in 1990 and by the state in 2010. The museum tells the story of the city and of a region that grew around the railway, industry and waves of immigrants, and entry has been free since it was founded, as its first aim is to bring knowledge to everyone. It makes a short visit on a tour of the ABC cities near the capital.
