The Folklore Museum of São José dos Campos is a cultural space inside the Roberto Burle Marx Municipal Park, known as the City Park, run under the Cassiano Ricardo Cultural Foundation. It was created by the municipal folklore commission in 1987 to show visitors the popular culture of the Paraíba Valley and the northern coast of São Paulo state. The museum first settled on a temporary basis in 1992, after years of field research, and moved for good in 1997 to the City Park, into the old house of the industrialist Olivo Gomes. In the 1920s the park was a 960,000-square-metre farm where the Parahyba textile mill opened in 1927; Gomes lived in the house, built in 1920, until he moved to his new residence in 1951. A visit pairs well with a walk in the wide park; check the hours.
