The Professor Dimas de Melo Pimenta Clock Museum is a specialist museum in São Paulo's West Zone that tells the historical and technical story of the clock and the many kinds people have used to measure the passing of time, and it presents itself as the only museum of its kind in Latin America. Its founder, the teacher and collector Dimas de Melo Pimenta, began his collection in 1950 with a silver pocket watch, and it grew into a museum, formally founded in 1975. It sits inside the headquarters of the company Pimenta founded in 1936, in a former factory building, and it was renovated, extended and reopened in October 2011. The museum displays more than six hundred clocks and watches of every size and period, from delicate pocket watches to tower and station clocks, and explains why precise timekeeping matters to sciences such as meteorology. Entry is free on weekdays, and the museum holds a retrospective show each year over the November holiday.
