The Historical and Artistic Museum of Maranhão occupies the Solar Gomes de Souza, a mansion built in 1836 for a farmer from the Itapecuru valley who was the father of Joaquim Gomes de Souza, a pioneer of mathematical research in Brazil. The state bought it in 1968 and the museum was founded in 1969. Its upper floor holds the permanent exhibition and a reconstructed 19th-century home, and there is a garden, a small 70-seat theatre and a lookout. Entry is free Tuesday to Friday 9:00-17:00, Saturday 9:00-16:00 and Sunday 9:00-14:00.
