The best-known sight in the hill town of Batu near Malang, a huge transport museum opened in 2014 with hundreds of cars, motorbikes, carriages and aircraft from many eras and countries, displayed not in silent halls but in zones designed like real streets. You move between themed areas: a European street of old facades, a Hollywood-style district, a 1920s American gangster town, the old Dutch port of Batavia, and an Indonesian zone with rickshaws and trains. At the back is a Javanese-style floating market on a small lake, plus an annexe museum of hats and costumes. Tickets cost about IDR 120,000, rising on holidays, and professional cameras sometimes cost extra. The site is big and needs at least three hours. It is great for families, children and car lovers, and pairs with nearby Jatim Park for a day in Batu. Avoid weekends if you can, as crowds are heavy.
