The largest general museum in Croatia outside Zagreb, in the baroque **main guardhouse** on Holy Trinity Square inside Tvrđa. It was founded in **1877** from a coin collection given by a local lawyer, and grew into a museum covering the whole of Slavonia and Baranja. The collections are broad: **archaeology** from prehistory to the Romans — and the region is rich in it, because the Roman road to Pannonia ran through here and the Roman city of **Mursa** lies beneath modern Osijek. There is a large **ethnographic** section of Slavonian folk dress and crafts, among the richest folk traditions in Croatia. Its best-known holdings are the Roman inscriptions from Mursa, along with a coin collection exceeding **twenty thousand pieces** — the museum''s original nucleus. Note: the museum has **two buildings**: the main guardhouse (archaeology and history) and the nearby **Europska avenija** building (art and ethnography). A ticket may cover one or both — ask. Note: labels are mainly in Croatian with partial English.

It is the **heaviest and spiciest** cuisine in Croatia and the furthest from the coast. There is no fish and no olive oil here but **pork, lard and red paprika**. Its best-known product is **kulen** — a dried pork sausage seasoned with sweet paprika, a protected-origin product and the region''s emblem. Then **fiš paprikaš**, a river-fish stew with red paprika cooked in a pot slung over an open fire, and **genuinely hot**, contrary to what a visitor expects of Croatia. ⚠ **For Muslim visitors**: this region is difficult — most of its characteristic dishes are built on pork and lard, and even vegetables are sometimes cooked in pork fat. Ask directly before ordering; the safer options are the river-fish dishes or restaurants in central Osijek with a broader menu.
