A suspended footbridge over the **Drava** linking central Osijek to the northern bank, and one of the city''s visual emblems. It opened in **1980** and was built with volunteer labour by the city''s young people — which is where its name comes from. Its single pylon rises about **37 metres**, carrying the cables that hold a deck some 210 metres long. Its value is functional rather than purely architectural: the northern bank is where the river beaches, picnic grounds and summer cafés are, and the bridge is the way to them. On summer evenings hundreds of residents cross it. From it comes the best angle on **Osijek''s river frontage**, with its trees and the cathedral behind. Note: the bridge was damaged in the **shelling of 1991** and repaired afterwards. Note: beneath it runs the **Drava promenade** along both banks — a long level path for walking and cycling, one of the best things in the city and the most used by its residents. Note: the northern bank is **sandy and shallow**, and people swim there in summer.

Over the Drava, Osijek
The city is small and the distances short. Start with **Tvrđa** in the morning — the square, the guardhouse and the **Museum of Slavonia** — and give it three hours. Then walk west along the **Drava promenade** to the modern centre (**Gornji Grad**), where the **cathedral** stands with its 90-metre tower, the second tallest building in Croatia. Lunch there. In the afternoon cross the **Youth Bridge** to the northern bank to walk or swim, or take the **tram** — Osijek is one of the smallest cities in Europe with a working tram network. ⚠ A **second day** should go to **Kopački Rit** and Baranja, which is really why you come to this region at all. ⚠ The city is **entirely flat** and ideal for cycling, with hire available.
