A contemporary art museum inside a country estate: Voorlinden (2016) was built by the Dutch collector Joop van Caldenborgh in his own grounds on the edge of Wassenaar โ a long white building under a glass roof designed to admit only natural daylight onto the works, surrounded by forty hectares of gardens, woodland and dunes. Its most famous piece is among the most photographed works of contemporary art anywhere: Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool โ a pool you descend beneath and stand inside, appearing from above to be underwater โ alongside Maurizio Cattelan's Reception Room. The permanent collection holds Richard Serra, Anish Kapoor and Ellsworth Kelly, with rotating temporary shows. The garden is itself a sculpture park and a complete walk, and the cafรฉ looks over the lawns. Twenty minutes north of The Hague by car or bus, deserving a full half day โ one of the most beautifully sited museums in the Netherlands.
