The Städel without hesitation if you like paintings — it is the most important. With children, the communications or film museum suits better. And if you want no museum at all, just walk the bank; it is lovely in itself.
Yes if you plan on three museums or more — it is valid for several days and covers most of the bank. For one or two, separate tickets are cheaper.
Very close. The south bank faces the old town directly and you cross by footbridge in minutes — the Alte Brücke is one of them.

The Museumsufer, or museum embankment, is the name given to the south bank of the river Main in Frankfurt, where some fifteen museums stand along a few kilometres, most of them inside handsome old villas. The idea took shape in the 1980s: rather than build one huge museum, the collections were spread through existing buildings along the river. The result is a single walk from which you pick what suits you — art at the Städel, architecture, film, communications, world cultures, applied art. Walking the embankment itself is free and pleasant: a tree-lined path beside the water, benches, and a view of the city towers on the opposite bank. Plenty of people come only for the walk, without entering a museum at all. In late August the Museumsuferfest fills the bank with stalls and music — one of the largest cultural festivals in Germany.
