Chongqing's best-known spot for the night view, a platform on the slopes of Nanshan south of the Yangtze, named after a lone old tree once visible from afar, looking straight at the Yuzhong peninsula and its packed towers between the two rivers. From the platform a panorama takes in the forest of skyscrapers on the hills, the many bridges over the two rivers, and Hongyadong and Raffles City at the confluence; the night view is among the finest city views in China. The best time to arrive is just before sunset, to see the city in daylight and then watch it light up gradually after about 7:30 pm, when towers and bridges glitter and their lights reflect on the river. Tickets are about CNY 30, open 09:00–22:30, per visitor guides. The mountain road is winding, so take a taxi; the platform is crowded on holidays, and haze can hide the view.

Then the lights.
