The Dietrich Schiel Observatory, popularly known as the observatory of the University of São Paulo's Centre for Scientific and Cultural Outreach (CDCC) in São Carlos, was set up on 4 April 1986 and opened on the 10th of that month, coinciding with the passage of Halley's Comet. It stands on the university's Campus 1 in the city centre. It is a small professional observatory devoted to sharing astronomy with the general public, and also gives technical and scientific guidance to anyone interested. In December 2011, after a quarter of a century, it was named the Astronomy Outreach Centre, Dietrich Schiel Observatory, on a date marking Brazil's Astronomer's Day and the birthday of Emperor Pedro II, a keen astronomer. Night-sky sessions used to run on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 20:00 to 22:00, weather permitting, and since February 2026 the centre has had a new planetarium with public shows at weekends at 15:00 and 16:00, tickets handed out half an hour before.
