The Aracaju Oceanarium, or Tamar Visitor Centre, is an aquarium on the Atalaia seafront in Aracaju, capital of Sergipe, about five hundred metres from the sea. It opened in June 2002 as the first oceanarium in north-east Brazil, and stands out for its building shaped like a giant turtle, covering 1,700 square metres under a roof of eucalyptus and piaçava palm fibre. It was set up and is run by Brazil's Tamar sea-turtle conservation project. Its eighteen tanks, five freshwater and thirteen saltwater, show some seventy species native to Sergipe, together with sea turtles and the story of their protection, and it welcomes about 120,000 visitors a year. It usually opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, with a full ticket of about R$36 and half price for students, children and older visitors. Between September and March, hatchling releases may be held on the beach on varying days.
