The Orla de Atalaia is Aracaju's main seafront and the largest of its waterfronts: kilometres of promenade along Atalaia beach with cycle paths, sports courts, a skate track, a go-kart track, artificial lakes, playgrounds, restaurants and hotels. Its symbol is the Arcos da Orla, concrete arches over 10 metres tall covered in blue tiles, built in 1994. Nearby, the Projeto Tamar oceanarium, opened in 2002 as the first in the Northeast, has 18 tanks with more than 70 marine species, among them sea turtles, sharks and seahorses. About 500 metres from the arches, a giant crab sculpture marks the start of the Passarela do Caranguejo, a strip of restaurants and bars with live music. Come in the late afternoon or evening, when the promenade fills with locals.
