The Oceanarium ranks first in Europe by visitor vote year upon year โ its idea its uniqueness: a five-million-litre central tank as one ocean where sharks, rays, the giant sunfish and tuna schools swim โ circled on two floors, with four oceans' habitats at its corners: sea otters (the house's absolute stars), Atlantic puffins, Antarctic penguins and the Indian reef's colour. Built as Expo 98's Oceans jewel on the exhibition waterfront โ the quarter itself completes the outing: the riverfront cable car, the gardens, the Vasco da Gama tower and the dock mall, making a guaranteed family half-day in rain or heat. The visiting rule: come before the noon school tide, turn right for the otters first โ and the lower floor, where glass meets the ocean's bed, is the greatest scene.
