Oia is the image that means "Greece" in the whole earth's imagination: white houses carved into the caldera rim, blue domes, windmills, a Cycladic cascade falling two hundred metres toward the volcano's sea โ the village that rebuilt itself after the 1956 quake into the Mediterranean's finest balcony, uncontested. Its cosmic rite is sunset: the sun drowning in the Aegean off the rim's end, the Venetian Castle of Oia its famous pulpit โ thousands mass for it nightly, so claim your spot (or a booked dinner terrace) two hours ahead, or take the alternative secret: any west-facing side lane gives the same scene without a stranger's shoulder. Below lies Ammoudi port and its fish tavernas on the water (280 steps down โ return by donkey or foot), the three blue church domes are photography's icon, and the rim trail to Fira (3-4 hours) is the Greek islands' greatest walk.
