A soaring granite rock above the western shore of Lake Burabay among pine forests, the symbol of the Burabay area and its best-known landmark. Its Kazakh name means «the arrow won't reach», a nod to its height and sheer sides. The rock is built of stacked granite layers that look almost laid by hand, shifting in colour between grey and gold with the light. In front of it in the lake sits the rock island of Zhumbaktas, and together they make one of Kazakhstan's most famous views. Many folk tales cling to the rock, of heroes and lovers, including the story of a girl who promised to marry whoever could shoot an arrow to its summit. The forest trails around it make lovely walks. The best views are from Bolektau hill opposite or from a boat on the lake, especially at sunset or under winter snow. Walking around it is usually free; ask about park fees on arrival.
