Garnier if the building is your aim — it can be toured by day on a ticket and is among the most beautiful opera houses in the world, with its staircase and Chagall ceiling. Bastille if the performance is your aim: better acoustics, major productions and lower prices. Ideally see a performance at Bastille and tour Garnier by day.
Book early on the official site — prices start very low for upper seats. Watch for descriptions like restricted or no view, as some cheap seats do not see the whole stage. Reduced tickets for young people and occasional last-minute offers also exist.

Paris's modern opera house on Place de la Bastille, opened in 1989 for the bicentenary of the French Revolution, and today the principal stage of the Paris National Opera. The political idea behind it was explicit: a people's opera with more seats at lower prices, set against the opulent Palais Garnier built for the nineteenth-century bourgeoisie. The auditorium holds about two thousand seven hundred seats, among the largest opera halls in Europe. The architecture caused a sharp argument and still does: a vast glass and grey facade placed on a symbolic square, which many found heavy and cold. Comparing it with Garnier is the clearest way to understand two centuries of changing taste and politics at once. Practical points: the exterior is free to see at any time. Getting inside means a performance ticket, and prices vary widely — cheap seats high up may have restricted views, so read the seat description before buying. Architectural tours are sometimes offered.
