The Oslo Tramway Museum

The Oslo Tramway Museum occupies a historic tram depot north of the centre, presenting the history of public transport in the capital: trams, buses and metro cars from the late nineteenth century to the present. Oslo is among the few cities in the world to have kept a continuous tram network without interruption since 1875 — many European cities tore theirs out in the 1950s and 60s in favour of the car and then regretted it and rebuilt. The museum explains how the network survived here and how the city shaped itself around it. The exhibits include wooden trams with their original benches and bells, early electric cars and buses from different decades. Many can be boarded. Volunteers run it and the hours are limited — a few days a week and fewer in winter. It suits children and a wet day.
