The Pajuçara natural pools are the best-known trip in Maceió, capital of Alagoas: pools of warm, clear, blue-green water that form on the coral reef offshore from Pajuçara beach when the tide goes out, so that visitors stand in the open sea with the water at their waist. They are reached on the traditional jangada sailing rafts from the beach, and colourful fish, sponges and crustaceans live in the pools. The restaurant boats that used to moor there were banned after polluting the water, and anyone throwing rubbish into the sea is fined. The rafts sail only at low tide, so ask about the time on the day of your visit. Pajuçara beach also has a well-known handicraft fair to browse after the trip.
