The Alagoas Museum of Image and Sound, «MISA», is a museum in Maceió's historic Jaraguá district, opened on 3 September 1981 to preserve the state's audiovisual heritage and overseen by the Alagoas state culture department. It occupies an old building on Praça Dois Leões, «Two Lions Square», which closed temporarily in 1997 because of weathering and was restored in 2001. Its collection holds records of city events in photographs, cassette tapes and video, old records and donated radios and analogue cameras, documenting the state's main social and artistic events. Besides its own collection, the museum hosts exhibitions and shows by many artists and launched the «Misa Acústico» series of small concerts showcasing Alagoas music. Jaraguá itself, the city's old port, has handsome historic buildings from the sugar boom, so the museum makes a stop on a walk around the district. It usually opens on weekdays from 8 to 16 with free entry; check before going.
