A historic stepwell in the town of Amer close to Amber Fort, dating to the sixteenth century, per visitor guides; it collected rainwater for the town and offered people a cool refuge from the summer heat. It is famous for its symmetrical criss-crossing steps covering all four sides in an astonishing geometric pattern, descending in tiers to the pool at the bottom, with small domed and balconied buildings around it and the hills of Amer behind. The stepwell has become one of Jaipur's best-known photo spots thanks to its repeating lines and warm colours, but going down the steps is usually not allowed, to protect the site, so visitors take photos from the edge. Entry is free, per visitor guides, and it's a short walk from Amber Fort, so the two combine easily. Early morning is best, when the light is soft and it's quiet.
